Welcome to Istanbul! Our representative will meet you at your port of entry and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours for exploration.
Depending on your arrival time, we can arrange for a daytime Bosphorus tour or an evening dinner cruise.
We begin this busy day with a tour of the ancient heart of Istanbul, Sultanahmet. Sites include the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, and the Basilica Cistern. We will then explore the world famous Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi).
This morning you fly to Cappadocia; our representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, you will have time to freshen up before meeting your guide for the first tour in the region. Today, we will drive to the Zelve Open Air Museum (Zelve Monastery), a cave village and early Christian settlement. Afterward, we will travel to nearby Pasabag to see the incredible fairy chimneys (peribacası) and to Devrent, which also contains many fascinating rock formations. Afterward, we head back to the hotel. In the evening, you have the option to try the Turkish baths and/or take in the mysterious rituals of the whirling dervishes.
Note: This morning you have the option to take a hot air balloon ride. Ballooning in Cappadocia is incomparable—the unique terrain allows experienced pilots to navigate through small valleys and ascend to dizzying heights. To experience hot air ballooning in this wondrous and challenging environment, we set off well before sunrise. As it is all about the wind and weather conditions, our experienced pilots and ground crew decide where (or even IF) we take off. Once you arrive at the launch site, it’s all hands-on; you can get involved in actually getting these huge balloons unfurled and inflated. It is an unforgettable experience for all those that participate. After the flight, we bring you back to your hotel where you will have breakfast and a chance to freshen up for the day ahead.
After breakfast, your guide will meet you for an unforgettable day of adventure. First, we do some light walking through one of the valleys of Cappadocia. Then we drive to the Göreme Open Air Museum where you will see beautiful Byzantine frescoes dating from the post-iconoclastic period.
Afterward, we visit the Kaymakli Underground City. So far they have discovered more than 36 underground cities in the region, and this is one of the largest, with 9 levels cleared and open to adventurous travelers. Legend has it that these underground cities stretch all the way across Cappadocia to Kayseri. Initially used as storage for animals and crops during the winter, they later became shelters during times of war and persecution.
Then we journey onwards to the Uçhisar Castle, a huge natural outcrop that has been used as a refuge and citadel from early times. Its peaks provide amazing views; we make several stops to see the region from different panoramic angles. Afterward, we head back to the hotel. You will have some time to rest before being picked up again for a Turkish folklore show. This event showcases some amazing cultural examples of dance, song, food, and wine. (There is no limit on food, local wine, spirits, and beer!) After the show, we will transfer you back to your hotel.
Day 5—Selçuk, Ephesus
Today you fly to İzmir; our representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Selçuk. After check-in, your guide will meet you and we will drive to Sirince. This village was settled by the Greeks in the 15th century, but after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s, its inhabitants are now Turkish. The village is famous for its beautiful white Greek houses, fruit wine, and Turkish pancakes. Wander the alleyways of the village and enjoy a pleasant dinner. We then head back to the hotel; the rest of the evening is yours to enjoy Selçuk’s local cafes and nightlife.
Day 6—Ephesus, Istanbul
Today we visit one of the best preserved-Hellenistic Roman cities—Ephesus. We walk the marble streets, visit the bordello, and experience the acoustically impressive 25,000 seat amphitheatre. We will also pay a short visit to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
After breakfast, our tour concludes. Depending on your flight time, you may still have time for some final shopping and exploring—ask us for recommendations!
